Jhoom Barabar Jhoom starts with a mysterious musician dressed in a gypsy like manner. He is shown dancing to the tune of the title track of the film. He is dancing and singing at Waterloo Station in London. Two people who are unknown to one another are waiting for their respective fiances. Rikki Thukral played by Abhishek Bachchan and Alvira Khan played by Preity Zinta are the two strangers. Rikki is from Bhatinda, a place in Punjab. He is a lively person. Alvira on the other hand is a middle class girl from Pakistan. To kill time they decides to sit in a coffee shop. They started to discuss about their respective partners.
Rikki said he met met his fiancé, Anaida Raza (Lara Dutta) at the Hôtel Ritz Paris. He also adds that it is the same night when Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al-Fayed, her lover were killed in an accident. According to Rikki, when two lovers die, two more lovers were born. He fell in love with Anaida on that very night.
Alivra Khan says she met Steve Singh played by Bobby Deol at Madam Tussauds Museum in London. He saver her from death because the spiderman wax model was about to fall on him. Their fateful meeting changed her life. He also helped to sue the authorities of Madam Tussauds Museum for damages caused to her. Finally she fell in love with that man.
Then it was revealed that both of them are not waiting for their partners. Rikki is waiting for his business partner and Alivara was waiting for her relatives. The rest of the film shows how they two meet again and fall in love with one another.
