Saawariya is a Hindi film inspired by a novel White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky. At first glance of the film, no one could make out what the film was all about. However to create an interest and publicity of Saawariya, the production house managed to give a brief idea about the story to the general public. Saawariya was much hyped as the film was the debut film of Sonam Kapoor who is the daughter of Anil Kapoor who is a very successful actor in Bollywood films. The film also launched Ranbir Kapoor who is the son of Anil and Neetu Kapoor who were very successful actors in their times.

There are guest appearances by Salman Khan who in the film plays the role of a fiance of Sonam Kapoor. The film is completely an adaptation of the novel. The film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is well known for making movies on sensitive issues. Saawariya was made keeping in mind the launch of Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor.
Saawariya also has Rani Mukherjee and Zohra Sehgal. However the screen presence of Rani Mukherjee is very less. The film begins with Rani Mukherjee narrating the entire story as Gulabi who is a close friend of Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir plays the role of a idealist boy who is madly in love with Sakina played by Sonam Kapoor. The songs of Saawariya was released early than the film and the trailers were shown on television with the songs and teasers. The teasers were shown as if the entire film is a dream sequence. The title track of Saawariya, “Saawariya” was the first trailer to create interest. Hindi films are promoted in this fashion as songs are an integral part of films. Most of the commercial films have more than one soundtrack. Some of the songs are just for promotional purpose while the rest are either dream sequence or in context with the film situation.
Saawariya was the first film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali after the phenomenal success of Black. The music director of Saawariya is Monty Sharma and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The music is very melodious and catchy. The lyrics of the songs are Sameer, Nusrat Badr and Sandeep Nath and the choreographers are Ganesh Hegde, Shiamak Davar and Pappu and Mallu. The songs shown of the trailers were well choreographed and the sequences were shown to attract the attention of the viewers. The trailers give no indication of the twist in the story. Two people are shown madly in love with one another and in the end of the trailer, Salman Khan is shown to enter the scene and thereby creating the mystery.
The sequences also does not give any indication of the sad ending and the fact that Sakina is engaged to Salman Khan. The characters are well defined in the film and in the trailers, Rani Mukherjee is not at all shown. Not until the film is viewed one does not know what role is played by whom. This is the main reason why the trailers too are eagerly awaited by the common public. |
