Sarfarosh is one of the Bollywood movies that are devoid of the lustre and typical of Bollywood formula. This is a film that really make you sit up and notice a move. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam belongs to this category. It in fact, sets a target, which was hard for other movies in the second half of 1999 to cross. There are quite a number of factors that favor for it. Technically, the film is unexpectedly brilliant with an outstanding cinematography. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam further offers a tour to every nook and corner of Gujrati culture. It brings out the best of traditional Gujrati and Rajasthani architecture.

The cultural influence of Gujrat and Rajasthan, which is the key to the storyline dominates the first half of the film. The colors of the culture of Rajasthan goes right from the dresses of Salman Khan or Samir and Aishwarya Rai or Nandini. The festivals of Navratri and kite flying, the rituals of marriage also make a exquisite tour to the culture of Rajasthan.
Besides, just looking wonderful, the film also comes out as above average. The efforts of the crew behind the camera is ably foregrounded by the performers in front. The movie has the best music of the year. The brilliance of the music is further exaggerated by the wonderful choreography of the film and fleet footed dancing of Aishwarya Rai. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam can be cited as one of the best integration of songs into the narrative of the movie in recent times. The previous effort of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's was called Khamoshi - The Musical. But this does not require any such tag line. The film deserves to be described as a musical excursion of the experimentation of the existing and few forms of Indian music. Debute music director Ismail Darbar excels with his composition of music that aptly suited the the brilliant lyrics by Mehboob. The film has a simple storyline but the characters are not simple. The music of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam rocked the chart busters of the year. Although Ajay Devgan or the character of Vanraj lacks the conventional glamor and grandeur of Hollywood hindi movie hero, but excels in his role as Nandini's husband.
Aishwarya Rai is brilliant in her dancing. As a serious, introvert Ajay Devgan is unparallel. Salman Khan is absolutely perfect and some of the emotional scenes have been wonderfully handled by him. The trailers of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam deploys Aishwarya Rai in-between Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. The Gujrati culture and its bright colors are also emphasized. The other two things that draws attention is the beautiful music of the film and the dance of Aishwarya Rai. Salman also did a brilliant job in accompanying Aishwarya in the dance sequences. The trailers particularly tries to bring out the huge star cast and the colorful and bright Gujarati culture. |
